Bradley Wood Scout Camp instructed Complete Asbestos Surveys to carry out a comprehensive asbestos management survey across its 60-acre site near Brighouse. With the previous survey around 15 years old, an updated assessment was needed to bring the site's asbestos information up to date. We surveyed 16 buildings and 139 individual rooms and areas, identifying two asbestos cement materials that can now be safely managed as part of the site's ongoing asbestos arrangements.

The Client's Challenge

Bradley Wood Scout Camp is a large 60-acre site in Brighouse containing numerous buildings used for camping, activities, accommodation and the day-to-day running of the centre.

The site includes camping blocks, toilet and washing facilities, activity areas, storage buildings and the site manager's bungalow. With so many different buildings spread across a large outdoor site, the asbestos survey needed to provide a clear picture of asbestos risks across the premises.

The previous asbestos survey was around 15 years old. Bradley Wood therefore required a new management survey to update its asbestos information and support its ongoing responsibilities under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

With the site regularly used by Scouts, staff, volunteers, visitors and contractors, having accurate information about the location and condition of asbestos-containing materials was particularly important.

Our Approach

We carried out a comprehensive asbestos management survey across the 60-acre site, inspecting 16 separate buildings and a total of 139 rooms and areas.

The survey covered the different buildings and facilities around the camp, including camping blocks, toilet facilities, activity areas, storage spaces and the site manager's accommodation.

Six suspect materials were sampled and submitted for laboratory analysis. Four returned negative results, while two were confirmed as containing asbestos.

Both positive samples were asbestos cement products associated with the site manager's bungalow. Asbestos cement sheets were identified to the garage roof, while asbestos cement under-cloaking was found around the property.

The materials were assessed and recorded within the new asbestos register, along with their locations, condition and recommendations for ongoing management.

As the identified asbestos cement materials could safely remain in place, immediate removal was not required. They can instead be monitored as part of Bradley Wood's ongoing asbestos management arrangements and reassessed if their condition changes or future works could disturb them.

Positive Outcome

Bradley Wood Scout Camp now has an up-to-date asbestos management survey covering 16 buildings and 139 rooms and areas across its extensive 60-acre site.

Only two of the six materials sampled were confirmed as containing asbestos, both associated with the site manager's bungalow. These asbestos cement materials are now documented and incorporated into the site's ongoing asbestos management arrangements.

The new survey gives staff and management clear information to provide to maintenance teams and contractors before work takes place, while helping Bradley Wood manage asbestos risks across a site used by Scouts, volunteers, staff and visitors.

After around 15 years since the previous survey, the camp now has current asbestos information and a clear basis for continuing to monitor and manage the identified materials.
