The Client's Challenge
Briton Engineering from Huddersfield needed an asbestos survey to satisfy insurance requirements and ensure compliance with their duty to manage asbestos. The site consisted of offices, production areas, workshops, storage facilities and a mezzanine level, all of which remained operational throughout the working day.
The client required a surveyor who could safely work around machinery, staff and ongoing manufacturing processes without causing unnecessary disruption. They also wanted straightforward advice on any asbestos risks identified and clear guidance on how these materials should be managed in the future.
Our Approach
We carried out a comprehensive asbestos management survey across approximately 1,600m² of internal areas, together with external inspections of the site. The survey covered offices, lobby areas, canteen facilities, production areas, workshops, storage rooms, toilets and mezzanine spaces.
To minimise disruption, sampling was undertaken during quieter periods and lunch breaks when work areas were less occupied. Due to the lack of safe roof access, drone technology was used to inspect external roof areas and assess their condition safely.
Five samples were taken and submitted for laboratory analysis. Four materials returned negative results for asbestos, including textured coatings, floor tiles and a sink pad. One positive asbestos-containing material was identified within a woven fuse guard located in a store area, which was confirmed to contain chrysotile asbestos.

Positive Outcome
The survey provided Briton Engineering with the asbestos compliance documentation required by their insurance provider while also giving management a clear understanding of the asbestos risks present within the building.
Only one asbestos-containing material was identified, and as it remained in good condition, removal was not required. Instead, recommendations were made to manage the material in situ, apply appropriate labelling and carry out annual re-inspections. The client received a detailed asbestos register, practical management guidance and ongoing support to ensure continued compliance. Following the survey, Briton Engineering left a 5-star review and now relies on us to undertake their annual asbestos re-inspections and keep their asbestos management plan up to date.
