The Client's Challenge
Co-op Food was preparing to install a new Post Office counter within one of its Wakefield stores. Before refurbishment works could commence, the client needed to identify whether any asbestos-containing materials were present within the areas affected by the planned alterations.
As the store remained operational and accessible to staff and customers, the survey needed to be carefully planned to minimise disruption while still allowing sufficient intrusive inspection of the proposed work areas. The client required clear and reliable survey information to avoid delays to the refurbishment programme and ensure contractor safety during the installation works.
Our Approach
We carried out a targeted asbestos refurbishment survey focusing specifically on the areas affected by the proposed Post Office installation works. The survey included intrusive inspection methods to access concealed building materials and identify any asbestos-containing materials that could be disturbed during construction.
The project covered approximately 1,200m² of retail and back-of-house areas. Four suspect materials were sampled and submitted for laboratory analysis. These included various building materials within the planned refurbishment zone that required investigation before works could proceed.
Following laboratory testing, all four samples returned negative results for asbestos. A detailed survey report was issued outlining the findings and confirming that no asbestos-containing materials had been identified within the surveyed refurbishment areas.
