The Client's Challenge
As a large industrial facility in Huddersfield with a long operational history, the building had undergone numerous alterations, upgrades and maintenance works over several decades. This created uncertainty regarding whether asbestos-containing materials remained within concealed building elements or service areas.
The client required a survey that could be carried out safely around ongoing operations while providing a clear understanding of any asbestos risks present. They also wanted practical recommendations that would allow them to manage any identified materials appropriately and plan future maintenance works without placing staff or contractors at risk.
Our Approach
We carried out a comprehensive asbestos management survey across the manufacturing facility, inspecting all accessible internal areas and taking samples of suspect materials for laboratory analysis.
The survey covered production areas, plant rooms, storage spaces, offices and ancillary service areas. Due to the age of the premises, particular attention was given to historic building materials, service risers and areas where previous alterations had taken place.
A total of four samples were taken and submitted for UKAS-accredited laboratory analysis. Testing confirmed the presence of chrysotile asbestos within a paper-backed vapour barrier material. Additional samples taken from textured coatings, a sink pad and fire door materials returned negative results for asbestos.
All identified asbestos-containing materials were risk assessed and recorded within the asbestos register before management recommendations were provided to the client.
