The Client's Challenge
R S Cockerill operates a large potato production facility in York, supplying major food retailers and manufacturers including Aldi and Walkers Crisps.
The company was planning refurbishment works to expand its staff welfare facilities and needed to establish whether asbestos-containing materials were present within areas that could be affected by the project.
As the wider premises also required ongoing asbestos management, the survey combined a management survey with targeted refurbishment investigations. This would provide R S Cockerill with information for the ongoing management of the building while also addressing the areas associated with the proposed works.
The survey needed to be completed safely within an operational food production facility, with careful consideration given to site procedures and ongoing activities.
Our Approach
We carried out an asbestos management survey with targeted refurbishment investigations across approximately 420m² of the York facility.
The inspection covered accessible areas requiring ongoing asbestos management as well as the specific areas associated with the planned expansion of the staff welfare building.
Two samples were confirmed as containing asbestos. The findings included asbestos cement roofing, which was assessed as being in a condition suitable for ongoing management rather than requiring immediate removal.
The asbestos-containing materials were recorded so their location and condition could be incorporated into the site's ongoing asbestos management arrangements.
Recommendations included monitoring the condition of retained asbestos-containing materials and ensuring the asbestos information was made available before future maintenance or refurbishment activities that could potentially disturb them.
