The Client's Challenge
Salendine Nook Baptist Church, Huddersfield occupies a large multi-level building that has undergone various alterations and improvements throughout its history. As with many older community buildings, there was uncertainty regarding the presence of asbestos-containing materials within original construction elements and service areas.
The church required a detailed asbestos management survey to help fulfil its legal duty to manage asbestos and ensure the safety of staff, volunteers, contractors and visitors using the premises. The client also needed practical recommendations regarding any materials identified so that future maintenance works could be planned safely and appropriately.
Our Approach
We carried out a full asbestos management survey across approximately 2,400m² of accessible internal and external areas. The inspection included basement accommodation, ground floor facilities, first floor rooms, circulation areas and external building elements.
Two suspect materials were sampled and submitted for laboratory analysis. Testing confirmed the presence of chrysotile asbestos within a bitumen coating applied to a water storage tank. Additional inspections were undertaken throughout the building to assess other historic construction materials and ensure no further suspect asbestos-containing materials were overlooked.
Due to the scale of the premises and the presence of high-level roof areas, drone technology was utilised to safely inspect external roofing materials and assess their condition without the need for intrusive access methods. All identified asbestos-containing materials were risk assessed and recorded within the asbestos register before management recommendations were provided.

Positive Outcome
The survey provided Salendine Nook Baptist Church with a clear and compliant understanding of asbestos risks within the building, allowing trustees and management to fulfil their legal duty to manage asbestos.
Only one asbestos-containing material was identified during the survey, and as it remained in a stable condition, immediate removal was not required. Instead, practical management recommendations were provided to allow the material to remain safely in situ while being monitored as part of the church's ongoing maintenance procedures.
With an updated asbestos register and management recommendations now in place, the church can confidently plan future maintenance works, contractor visits and building improvements while ensuring the safety of everyone using the premises.
