The Client's Challenge
Tingley Methodist Church, Tingley, Leeds occupies a large multi-use property consisting of worship spaces, community facilities, meeting rooms, storage areas and service spaces. With multiple community groups using the buildings throughout the week, the trustees required an up-to-date asbestos survey to ensure they remained compliant with current asbestos legislation and could safely manage any identified asbestos-containing materials.
As with many older church and community buildings, there was uncertainty regarding the presence of asbestos within historic construction materials, service areas and plant rooms. The client required a thorough survey together with practical recommendations that would allow the buildings to remain operational while ensuring asbestos risks were properly controlled.
Our Approach
We carried out a detailed asbestos management survey across both the church and community centre, inspecting all accessible internal and external areas. Particular attention was given to boiler rooms, service areas, roof spaces and historic building elements where asbestos-containing materials are commonly encountered within older community buildings.
A total of eight samples were taken from suspect materials and submitted for UKAS-accredited laboratory analysis. The inspection identified asbestos-containing materials associated with historic heating infrastructure, including pipe insulation and a loose flue material located within the boiler room area. Each identified asbestos-containing material was assessed for condition, accessibility and potential risk before being recorded within the asbestos register.
Following completion of the survey and laboratory analysis, a detailed asbestos survey report was issued together with practical management recommendations tailored to the church's operational requirements.
